THE IDEAL CITY
A project of civilization, a participation of ideas, a constitutive action
We are tired to keep on falling back, over and over and artists, which are sensitive men, attempt to tell us the discomfort of a hardened and out dated distrust.
Nostalgia of happiness arouses from our stages, but it gets caught on the language of skepticism. This festival?s edition will be a work of art as a whole, with its symphony of performances, multiple stages, atmospheres, encounters, which emanates a sense of Impossible Possibility, experimenting a language to think the unthinkable. We will use the phrase “Ideal City” instead of Utopia, because Utopia is a dangerous word: we are compromised by a Twentieth Century’s deformation, which makes us think about what will never exist, instead of what is not existing yet. This Ideal City is a luminous form, an invitation to create, to conceive higher dreams, a model of civilization that goes beyond this time, this space and the details concerning them.
We want to set this constitutive action here, in Volterra, carrying on with the discourse of the Mercuzio non vuole morire‘s project which began in 2011. Together with the citizens of every age involved in the creative process, mentored by the Masters which share our ethical and political act, we want to ask which kind man, desire, history are worthy to fight for.
The heart of the Ideal City is the theatre, the ideal place of every city in time, the place of the soul in its concrete and visible manifestation; according to Armando Punzo: «the theatre is the concrete architecture of an intangible space, the inner space of every man against the logic of the every day life, to be nurtured».
The Volterrateatro’s Ideal City will be the Persio Flacco Theatre in Volterra, thanks to the precious support of Accademia dei Riuniti. Theatre will be completely transfigured by the performances, workshops, exhibitions, installations, people, at every hour, occupying all its spaces. A cultural crossroad, populated by music and books, theatre makers, poets, art managers, spectators, common people.
Volterra, Pomarance, Castelnuovo Val di Cecina and Montecatini Val di Cecina hosted the festival from the 25th to t he31st of July 2016.
